Ted was born on August 29th, 1910 at the family home on Bush Street in San Francisco’s Japantown, the only boy amongst seven sisters. His father, Tsunekichi Imai, who had immigrated to the United States in 1899, was one of the first Japanese professional photographers in the United States and took one of the best known photos (called the "Night time cloud effect") of the Victorian style third Cliff House. He was also the first practitioner in the continental United States of Japanese garden design, including Bonsai and the raising of Koi. Ted attended Redding Grammar School at Pine and Larkin and graduated from Galileo High School. As a boy he rode his bike all over the City delivering the Japanese language "New World Sun," and during the summers was a "fruit tramp," picking agricultural products in the Central Valley and the Delta. He also was an " Alaska boy," working with many other Japanese boys in the fish canneries in Alaska. After Pearl Harbor, Ted and other U.S. residents of Japanese ancestry were evacuated to "relocation camps" and Ted was first sent to an assembly center at Tanforan Race Track (where he met his wife, Mary) and then on to Camp Topaz ("the jewel of the desert") in Utah. Released from the camp near the end of the war, Ted was employed at The Toele Ordinance Depot in Utah, but he and Mary returned to San Francisco soon after it snowed on the 4th of July. After the war Ted worked for the Simmons Mattress Company until his retirement in 1976. One of his favorite memories was helping to construct the giant circular bed for the newlyweds Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. Ted was a firearms enthusiast most of his life and held a lifetime membership in the NRA, won in a pistol marksmanship contest in 1939. After his retirement from Simmons, Ted was the Range Master at the City-owned shooting facility in Pacifica for almost ten years, and worked weekends at the San Francisco Gun Exchange. Ted was a well known neighborhood figure and managed the apartment building where he lived for forty years on Divisadero Street near Turk. An avid amateur photographer, until his very last days he took the bus regularly to Pier 39 to take photos and regale tourists with his tales of old time San Francisco . Ted’s wife, Mary, died in 1992. Ted is survived by two of his sisters, Aya Tsurutani, 1204 Ashland Ave., Santa Monica, CA 90405 and Mrs. Helen Tanabe, 8410 Drayer Lane, South San Gabriel, CA 91770, many nieces and nephews and friends everywhere.
