SAITO, MARTHA MAKIMOTO. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on November 4, 2006. Martha was a very caring and generous woman who especially enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables in her garden. She was also a wonderful cook and loved to share homemade meals with her many friends and family. She leaves us with many wonderful memories. She is survived by her husband, George Saito; children, Richard, Jeannette and Milton; daughters-in law, Dianne and Mary; son-in law, Yngve; grandchildren, Denise, Marc and Michael; granddaughters-in-law, Kimberly and Brooke; great grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Jacob and Atticus. By her brothers, James (Betty) and George (Mitsi) Makimoto; sisters Alice Kakehashi, and Janice (Carl) Muto; also by many nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. SAKAI, CHIEKO, the matriarch of the Uoki Sakai grocery store in San Francisco’s Japantown — which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year — passed away peacefully on July 1, 2006 at the age of 89. She was the beloved wife of the late Tamotsu Sakai. She is survived by her sons, Paul and his wife Carol and their son Christopher; Robert and his wife Alicia and their children Ryan, Lauren and Tyler; and Dale and his wife Lori and their son Wren. SAKAMOTO, GRACE KAZUKO, 81, passed away peacefully at home on August 24, 2006 amongst loved ones after a period of failing health. She was born on November 25, 1924 in Kyoto, Japan. She lived in the Monterey area for 56 years and was loved by all, especially by family members, because of her cheerful, kind, and loving manner. She was an artistic and adventurous person. She enjoyed making her own crafts and loved going to Nevada to play the slot machines and keno games in the casinos. She is survived by her loving spouse of 59 years, Gengo; daughter Michelle M. Sakamoto of San Jose; and three sons: Dana N. Sakamoto of San Diego, Byron T. Sakamoto of San Francisco, and Wayne M. Sakamoto of Monterey. Surviving also are three grandchildren: Ami U. SATO, SUMIKO, passed away on September 1, 2006 at home in Laguna Beach, CA. She was born on September 18, 1914 in San Juan Bautista, CA. She is survived by her daughter Kazuko Nancy Chino; son Tadashi Tad Sato; grandchildren Lisa Chino, Judy Baldridge, Kevin Sato and Sondra Miller; and great-grandchildren Christine Baldridge, Brent Baldridge and Zachary Miller. Her husband of 59 years, Toyota, and her son Masato Don Sato preceded her in death. She was a resident of Menlo Park, CA from 1947 to March 2006. She found joy in her family and in teaching and practicing the art of Ikebana. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 24 at 3 p.m. at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple. SETO, KIYUMI JANE, 78, passed away on January 21, 2006 at Kaiser South Sacramento. She was born on September 7, 1927 in Marysville, Calif. She is survived by her sons Steven L. (Mary L.) Seto, Bradley G. (Marla) Seto and Ronald (Judy) Seto; daughter Carolyn J. Heard and 12 grandchildren. Kiyumi was a member of the Okayama Kenjin Kai and the Sacramento Japanese Methodist Women’s Club. She was devoted to her family and friends. She believed strongly in giving to others and the importance of our family traditions and cultures. She will be remembered with all our love. SHIMAZU, MASAKO MARY, 77, passed away on March 16, 2006 at the Eskaton Nursing Home. She was born in Marysville, Calif. Shimazu is survived by her husband Shigeru "Shig" Shimazu, son Ronnie (Diane) Shimazu, daughter Rene Weaver, brother Joe (Mitzi) Abe, sisters June Omori, Francis (Howard) Sakai and Michiko (Hideki) Ikenoyama and four grandchildren. SHINODA, FUMI, passed away on October 24, 2006 in Oakland, Calif. She was born on March 21, 1920 in Portland, Oregon to Nobukazu and Hide Yakura Teshima. Shinoda is survived by son Brian, daughter Anne, their spouses and four grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Yoshio of Seattle, WA. A service was held on October 28 at Berkeley Methodist United Church. SUMIDA, DOROTHY YAYEKO, 86, passed away on August 25, 2006 in San Jose, Calif. She was born on February 9, 1920 in Los Gatos, Calif. Sumida is survived by daughters Karen (Bill) Wilt, Janet (Hari) Kojima and Lisa (Thomas) Steele; son Sean Sumida; son-in-law Bob Likins; granddaughters Emily, Lauren and Sarah Wilt, Marissa Likins and Lindsay and Courtney Steele; grandsons Krag Likins and Justin Steele; and nephews Richard (Frances) Kushino and Dr. Norman (Catherine) Kushino. She was predeceased by daughter Judith Likins. Sumida was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the JACL. A celebration of her life will be observed on Saturday, November 18 at 2 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 566 North 5th St., San Jose, CA. SUMIDA, JOHN YUTAKA, 87, passed away on June 10, 2006 in Kaneohe, Hawaii. He was born on March 25, 1919 in Hollister, Calif. Sumida is survived by his daughters Karen J. Wilt, Janet L. Kojima and Lisa J. Steele and his son Sean C. Sumida. He was a member of the VFW, San Jose Chapter; American Gem Society and the MIS Veterans, Hawaii Chapter. TAKAMOTO, FUMIYE “TONI,” 87, passed away after a long illness on April 19, 2006 in San Jose, California. She was born in Monterey, Calif. on February 5, 1919 and was a graduate of Monterey Union High School and Heald College. Toni was interned at Poston II in Arizona, then left to go to Provo, Utah and eventually Rockford, Illinois. She married Robert Shigeto Takamoto in 1945. In 1952 they moved to San Jose, where they resided until settling in Chula Vista in 1957. Most recently, Toni lived in Pleasant Hill and San Jose. She was was preceded in death by her husband Robert (12/25/1910 ~ 5/25/1994). Toni is survived by her daughter Sharon T. (Harry K.) Hasegawa; grandson Bradley R. Hasegawa; sister Yuki Sumida; sister-in-law Grace Takamoto; nephews Robert I. Sakamoto, Kit S. Sakamoto, Talbert R. Sakamoto, Douglas T. Sumida, Allen T. Sumida and Jeffrey T. TANIMURA, ROBERT TAKESHI, 76, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning February 18, 2006 at his home in Salinas after a long and quiet battle with cancer. He was born in Castroville, CA. Tanimura, known to all as Bobby, is survived by his brothers and his sisters-in-law George and Masaye Tanimura, John and Sakako Tanimura, Tom and Hisako Tanimura; his sister-in-law, Fumiko, wife of his late brother Charles, all of Salinas; his sisters Alice Sato of Palo Alto, Rose Yuki of Los Gatos and Betty Furusho of Mountain View; his nephews and nieces, Gary and Keith Tanimura, Bonnie Yokota, June and Jeanne Tanimura, of Salinas, Susan Tanimura of Fresno, Glenn Tanimura of San Jose and Leslie Morishita of San Carlos, CA, Carole Nakamura of Hawaii, Ann Murano of Saratoga and JoAnn Yuki of Los Gatos as well as his many grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Tanimura was a member of the Salinas Valley JACL, the Farm Bureau, Tanimura & Antle Co. and the Buddhist Temple of Salinas. They all, as well as his colleagues at Tanimura & Antle and their families, and everyone else who knew and loved him, will miss him. TERAOKA, JANE K., 95, a San Mateo resident for 54 years, died peacefully on May 7, 2006 at B&B Nursing Home. TOKUGAWA, JOHN SAKAE, 87, passed away on March 25, 2006 at the Lawton Health Center in San Francisco. He was born on July 20, 1918 in Antioch, Calif. Tokugawa is survived by his wife Tsuuko Tokugawa, sons Alan Masaharu Tokugawa and Jerry (Diane) Tokugawa, grandchildren Dawn (Tim) Rowe and Kai Tokugawa and great-grandchild Jaden Rowe. TSUKASAKI, MAS G., DDS. Passed away Friday, November 24, 2006 in Berkeley, at 89 years of age. A native of San Francisco, and 84-year resident of Berkeley. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Etsuko P. Tsukasaki of Berkeley; daughter, Corinne Burrus of Washington state; and sons, Clyde Tsukasaki of Santa Clara, and Bruce Tsukasaki of Berkeley. Dr. Tsukasaki graduated from Berkeley High School in 1935, graduated from Cal Berkeley in 1939, and received his doctorate from UCSF Dental School in 1941. During World War II he served as an officer in the US Army in Europe; he remained in the US Army Reserve, and retired as a colonel in 1967. Dr. Tsukasaki had a dental practice in Berkeley for many years; retired 1982. TSUNEKAWA, TOSHIO, 81, passed away on January 27, 2006 at Lafayette Convalescent Home. He was born in Stockton, Calif. TSUYUKI-COOC, KAREN HARUMI, a five-year resident of Walnut Creek and native of Berkeley, died Thursday, August 10, 2006 at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. She was 45. UCHIDA, ZENICHIRO, 85, passed away on March 30, 2006 at his home. He was born in Kushikino city Seifuku in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan. Uchida is survived by his wife Shizuko Uchida, son Seiichiro (Makiko) Uchida, daughter Tomiko (Masatoshi) Takeda, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by brothers Keishiro (Hatsuko) Uchida and Jyuro (Kyoko) Uchida and nephew Akira (Gloria) Nishizono. His siblings in Japan are sisters Naru Nishizono, Kasumi Furuzono, Chizuko Uchida, Kazuko Sunada and Kukiko Tsuchihashi, sister-in-law Miyuki Wasada, and brothers Yoshikazu Uchida and Shizuo Ootake. Uchida was a member of the Beikoku Moralogy, Kagoshima-ken Hokubei Ijyusha Kyokai, Aomori-ken Tatsuko-machi (Gilroy Sister City), Kushikino-kai, Kushikino (Salinas Sister City), Kagoshima Kenjin-kai Santa Clara Shibu, the Buddhist Temple of Salinas Fujin-kai and the Buddhist Temple of Salinas. UEMURA, ITSUO, 84, passed away on March 13, 2006 at his home. He was born in Kushikino, Kagoshima prefecture. Uemura is survived by his wife Hisako, daughter Kim (Rocky) Shiraishi, sons Yoshikazu (Alicia) and Jim Yutaka Uemura and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Toki Yamaguchi and sisters-in-law Yoshie Uemura and Tatsue Uemura of Japan. UMEKUBO, HIDEKO, 103, passed away on May 27, 2006 in the Community Convalescent Hospital in San Francisco. She was born on July 13, 1902 in Yamanashi-ken, Japan. YEGO, TADASHI, 87, passed away on March 27, 2006 at Sutter Roseville Hospital. He was born in Newcastle, Calif. Yego is survived by his wife Takino Yego, sister Sue Masue Noda, sister-in-law Masako Yego, nephews Tom (Jean) Yego, Jr. and Lynn (Mary) Noda and nieces Jean (Donald) Yamada, Elaine (George) Hirabayashi, Peggy Stevenson, Lucille (Chester) Fukushima and Ruth (Bob) Noda. YOKOYAMA, TAKIO JAMES, 92, passed away on March 17, 2006 at California Pacific Medical Center Pacific Campus in San Francisco. He was born on October 8, 1913 in Los Angeles, Calif. Yokoyama is survived by his wife Namiko Yokoyama, son Toshio Bob (Judy) Yokoyama, daughter Janet (Daniel) Kunihara, sisters-in-law Chiyoko Yokoyama and Mary Ikenaga, brother-in-law Frank (Kiyoko) Ikenaga, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. YOSHIDA, SHIYOGE “SHO,” a former owner and operator of Sunnyside Nurseries, Inc., of Salinas and Hayward, died September 9, 2006, following a lingering illness. A long-time Salinas resident, Mr. Yoshida was born in Oakland on March 11, 1925. He settled in Salinas in 1968 to operate the newly expanded Sunnyside Nurseries, which was founded by his Father, Eisaku, in Oakland in 1917. Mr. Yoshida devoted his career to building Sunnyside Nurseries into one of the nation’s largest and foremost wholesale growers of quality poinsettias, lilies and African violets. Mr. Yoshida oversaw the conversion of Sunnyside Nurseries to automation, one of the earliest large-scale conversions in the nation. Mr. Yoshida was active in the Salinas community as well as nationally as a member of the Salinas Rotary Club, Monterey County Water Board, Society of American Florists and the Ohio State Florists Association. Mr. Yoshida was a regular contributor of his knowledge and experience to Ohio State University. He was a past president of the Japanese-American Citizens League of Eden Township, and a member of the Salinas and Oakland Buddhist Churches. During World War II, Mr. Yoshida was interned for the war’s duration at Tule Lake, California. Survivors include his beloved wife, Ruby, and four children: Craig, of Redmond, WA; Donna Castro of Orinda, CA; Laura Henschen of San Diego, CA, and Joey of Salinas. Also surviving are siblings Emiko Miyamura of Castro Valley; Bettay Araki of Carmichael; Saburo of Discovery Bay; Kinuko Hayashi of San Mateo; Setsuko Endo of Castro Valley, and sister-in-law Fusae Yoshida of Walnut Creek. He also leaves two granddaughters, Martha Castro and Julianna Henschen, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother and business partner, Eiichi Yoshida of Hayward, and his sister, Nobuko Coleman of Redmond, WA. YOSHIOKA, JUNE NORIKO, passed away on May 24, 2006. She was born in San Francisco on June 19, 1916 to Dr. Chotoku and Alice (Tanaka) Nishi. June was a florist at the Yoshioka Nursery and Florist from 1935 to 1986. She was a member of the Oakland Buddhist Church, the Eden Township Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and recently the TOPS Club. She was predeceased by husband Giichi “Smiley” Yoshioka and brother Allen Taka Nishi. June is survived by children Vernon (Shinobu) Yoshioka of San Diego and Allena (Clinton) Donati of Santa Barbara, brother Vernon (Emi) Nishi of Walnut Creek, sister Jewel Okawachi of Albany, sisters-in-law Yukie Goto of Hawaii and Toyoko Yoshioka of Newark, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. YUSA, ATSUKO “SUE,” 86, a long-time resident of the Bay Area, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2006 in Berkeley. She is survived by two nephews, James Yusa and Wayne Yusa, and two nieces, Elaine Yusa and Ruth Yusa, all from Chicago. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at the Berkeley Methodist United Church, 1710 Carleton St. Donations in memory of Sue may be made to the Berkeley Methodist United Church.
