On April 4, an 83-year-old man was struck by a Municipal Railway bus on Geary Boulevard at Fillmore Street which left the him with serious injuries to his pelvis and legs, making it the 19th Muni-pedestrian collision this year, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

Baseball in Japan dates back to 1878 but the seminal date in its history is 1934, when a team of American All-Stars led by Babe Ruth toured the country to promote the sport. Baseball's popularity took off after that, and Ruth is considered the game's first goodwill ambassador.

SALT LAKE CITY — In Salt Lake County's District 4, former attorney and community activist Jani Iwamoto has become the Democratic challenger to GOP Councilman Mark Crockett for the County Council seat, a hotly contested election in which a win would mean Democratic control of the Salt Lake City Council where Republicans hold a 5-4 majority.

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. — Dennis Hayashi has declared that he will run for Superior Court Judge of Alameda County, District 9. He has already secured the endorsements of a number of state and local elected officials, judges, associations and advocacy groups, including State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, Alameda County Undersheriff Richard Lucia, the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of Alameda County, the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association, Hayward Firefighters Local 1909 and Crime Victims United.

CHICAGO — When the Wrigley family sold the Chicago Cubs to the Tribune Co. in 1981, a clause in the deal mandated that famed clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano could have a job with the team for as long as he wanted. But after 65 seasons with the team, Kawano, who will turn 87 this June, will have "new duties" this season because of health concerns, according to team chairman Crane Kenney.
